Music In Memoriam per Viola Sola by Eduardo Viñuela

Hit play before reading!

This week we will listen to a work by the Mexican composer Eduardo Viñuela, who was born in 1976 in Mexico City, he began studying piano at the age of 11years old. In recent years, he has developed a compositional technique based on various mathematical theories, the central point of his research is a new approach to musical composition with the help of geometries of incidence. His works have been presented abroad in cities such as New York, Chicago, and The Hague in Holland.

"Musica in Memoriam per Viola Sola", was composed in memory of Dimitri Shostakovich and Anna Akhmatova. The composer describes it as "a journey that begins as a funeral lament and at times contemplative to continue with a cry of despair and sarcasm, to culminate with a feeling of loneliness. Long silences that lead us to reflection"

From the beginning we can hear the use of crescendos and some dissonances that are introducing us to the piece, it is interesting to see how the interpreter changes bow when moving to the next faster section, surely to achieve better bow strokes of the string. Then we return to another calm section, where the composer explores the colors of the instrument's sound, in some parts it seems that we are listening to a flute or a wind instrument, in this way the magnificent work for viola solo is concluded.

The video we are listening to is performed by Omar Hernández Hidalgo (1971-2010), who was one of the most outstanding Mexican violists both nationally and internationally. He was a tireless diffuser of the viola to whom several works were dedicated, just as he made the premiere in Mexico of many others. At the end of this month, it will be 11 years since his death and as it mentions the composer E. Viñuela, now this video is dedicated to his memory.

Thank you very much and see you next soon with more viola music by Mexican composers.
