Hit play before reading!

Arturo Pantaleón Mendoza Jansch is a Mexican horn player, composer, and conductor who grew up between Oaxaca and Mexico City. Its musical studies were carried out at the National Conservatory of Music; in Mexico he was a member of the Orquesta de la Ópera de Bellas Artes and a soloist with the Orquesta Clásica de México; he also studied horn in Germany at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and at the Hochschule für Musik Hans-Eisler in Berlin. He studied composition with Gernot Reetz and Nikolai Badinski. The teacher defines his music as Amerindian-Latin American adapted to the time in which he lives, making bridges between the continents and living the worldview of his ancestors.

Maxahuaxi Concerto for Viola and Orchestra Op. 23 is a symphonic work full of pre-Hispanic overtones, characterized by the use of instruments such as the huéhuetl, teponaztli and seashell; the work consists of three movements: I- Allegro maestoso, Remembering old times, II- Pietoso, To the dear deceased, III- Huichol Jarabe, the Blue Deer. It begins with a brief introduction of the orchestra and this is where we can distinguish the pre-Hispanic percussion marking the time, then the viola enters, starting in a low register and develops the theme until it reaches very high registers of the instrument. The second movement is a calmer air, it is like a lament between the solo viola and the strings. The third movement is connected to the previous one and we can distinguish very characteristic rhythms of Mexican music, such as combinations of 6/8 and 3/4, it is worth mentioning in this section the use of the seashell.

Without a doubt, it is a great work for the viola, one of the last written by Mexican composers for this format of soloist with orchestra and that comes to enlarge the national repertoire of the viola, the work was completed in 2012, and It is dedicated to Britt Landmark, like her sisters Yetlanezi, Xochitl and Ángela Mendoza.

It is worth highlighting the wonderful performance of the soloist in this concert, the teacher Felisa Hernández Salmeron, who is the principal violist of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra and a viola teacher in some schools in Mexico City; In recent years, she has organized activities in favor of the diffusion of the viola, such as the International Viola Workshop of the Americas (TIVA), which will have activities in the near future. In the following link you can register and find out what they do at TIVA https://www.tivafhs.com/.
