Domestic Music (variations for two violas) by Abraham Calva

 Hit play before reading!

This week we will listen to the work of the young composer Abraham Calva, who has a degree in Composition from the University of Guadalajara. He has won several awards and has been a recipient of the PECDA Jalisco, he is currently director of the Pedro Bocotán Orchestra of the Autonomous University of Jalisco and composer and resident arranger of the Chamber Orchestra of the same university. In his own words, the composer mentions that his music takes up Baroque musical resources as well as folk music from different latitudes.

The work Domestic Music (or Language Therapy), is a series of 10 variations for two violas composed in 2020; the work was commissioned by the architectural firm Estudio 3.14. Each variation illustrates the interior and exterior spaces of a house, as well as the beings that inhabit them: dogs, birds, insects, mountains, fire, etc. The author comments that each variation can be considered a brief composition exercise that involves twists in the creative process and new references, hence the alternate title is: Language Therapy, each variation is a personal way of communication with various entities, almost as a language.

Each movement has the peculiarities that make it unique, each one has the title "To talk to ..." and here is where the characters that inhabit the place appear. It is a very interesting work, I was particularly impressed by the end of each variation, which feels like a conclusion, but in turn, they indicate that the work is still going on; It is a piece with different tempos, which makes it easy to listen to and gives freshness to each little piece.

It is important to mention that the composer himself is the interpreter of this video, who due to the pandemic recorded both parts of the violas, undoubtedly a composer whose music we will soon be listening to, as well, he is preparing new works for viola and thereby, expanding the repertoire of Mexican composers.

My new website is now available where you will find a list of Mexican composers with works for viola and a Pedagogical section organized by levels where you can find works to be performed in each semester of undergraduate studies.
